What is mSATA SSD and which are the best for your PC?

Are you are a gamer or want to play awesome, modern heavy games on your PC? If you do, I will suggest you to exchange your old hard drive with the modern SSD. But, if you don’t have a budget to buy SSD or your PC is an old one, then what should you do? For those, I definitely suggest buying an mSATA SSD. Now, what is mSATA SSD? Let’s discuss this.

What is mSATA SSD?

mSATA (miniserial ATA) SSD is also an SSD but with small in size(form factor) than regular ones. Due to its small size, low power consumption it becomes quite popular now. It is a perfect fit for small systems that require higher resources like laptops, small CPUs, etc.

You can install mSATA SSD with your hard drive and it increases the boot speed, loading speed tremendously in your system. At first, it was used only for a support role with a hard disk to enhance game loading screen time, to load every software fast. Since they come in really smaller size of 32, 64GB (earlier, now they have storage capacity like a regular SSD), which is obviously not enough to store files.

But, with the passing of time, companies giving more attention to increase it’s storage capacity also. Due to which now they come with more than 128GB (generally). And now mSATA SSD is also capable of doing everything without a hard drive.

Work of an mSATA SSD:

Basically, mSATA SSD is an SSD with a small form factor. It is perfect for those who don’t want super expensive SSD and also don’t like a hard disk. It can handle old computers because it requires minimum power and loads your files, software, boots your system way faster than a hard drive.

But if you already are using an SSD then this post is not for you. SSD can give you better performance and also has a bigger storage capacity than mSATA SSD, but they are expensive too.

If you ask me, I suggest you to use a hard disk(with your preferred size 1TB, 2TB) and also an mSATA SSD of at least 128GB. If you do this, you get enough space to do your works properly.

Difference between mSATA and SATA SSD’s:

SATA SSD and mSATA both are SSD’s which make your system faster than a usual hard drive. But here are some common differences between them.

  • mSATA SSD is very small than usual SSD. So, they are best for small systems with good output.
  • It SSD needs minimum power while SATA SSD needs a good amount of power.
  • It SSD is less expensive than SATA SSD.
  • Undoubtedly, SATA SSD can give you better results than mSATA SSD.
  • The storage capacity of mSATA SSD is less than SATA SSD’s {now they are almost same)

is mSATA faster than SSD?

Since mSATA SSD is a part of general SSD, so undoubtedly SSD is faster than mSATA. But, you can’t compare a $500 SATA SSD with a $50 mSATA. Both have their own benefits and disadvantages. But, mSATA is specially made for budget gamers who want to speed up their system in the budget. Overall, SSD is faster than it.

is mSATA the same as M.2?

However, they are almost the same but there are some differences between them.

  • You have to install mSATA SSD in the mSATA port, while M.2 SSD supports not only SATA but also PCIe slot.
  • There are too many sizes available for new M.2 SSD’s but mSATA has only one-two size varients.
  • Undoubtedly, both are made for high performance.

Which is faster mSATA or M.2?

Talking about their performance, experts say both SSD gives the same performance however I saw M.2 SSD is slightly faster than mSATA SSD. When I installed an mSATA SSD of 128GB and play GTA V, I noticed that in-game the loading screens are gone to fast.

After that, I install M.2 SSD and I found slightly better results than the previous one.

Now let’s move to our final section how to install an mSATA SSD in your system:

How to install an mSATA SSD?

Requirements:

  • mSATA SSD
  • A Screwdriver
  • Your CPU/mSATA SSD’s user manual (not necessary if you know the ports)

First, open your CPU cabinet using screwdrivers. To do so, you have to open the thumbscrews located at the backside. To avoid static damage, I prefer to wear hand bands. Yes, there are too many anti-static bands available in the market which doesn’t allow to pass current from your body to the object.

After that, find your mSATA port on your motherboard. If you are using a new motherboard then it has an mSATA port. (see it in the manual)

After fixing your SSD in mSATA port, give a gentle press and you will hear the sound of a click. Now, your installation is done. Just close the cabinet and you are ready to run.

Precautions:

If you want to use the only mSATA or remove your old hard drive, you have to copy/backup your files from the old hard drive and copy it to the new mSATA. There are too many ways to do that, but according to me, first, install mSATA with a hard drive and copy it’s filed to mSATA. Therefore unmount (take out) your hard drive. But, following this process, you have to reinstall Windows.

Conclusion:

It is very important to upgrade your hard disk to an SSD if you wanna heavy tasks like gaming, video editing, app development, etc. Because to do these kinds of things you need speed, unfortunately, your hard drive can’t give you that much power. So, I always advise everyone to go with SSD, at least mSATA SSD for those who don’t have budget.
