Steam is one of the best platforms which provide us games (especially PC) at a very cheap price. So, it is like heaven for gamers like us. But, sometimes when I try to download or install a game it shows an error i.e. steam disk write error.
It is really frustrating when steam stops with this error. Obviously, you are eagerly waiting to play the game as quick as possible. So, let’s figure it out this steam’s error-
What is steam disk write error?
You generally get steam disk write error while you are updating, installing a game and also when you are updating it. In my case, while I was updating my Devil May Cry 5, I got the error. It was like this- An error has occurred while installing Devil May Cry 5 (disk write error).
Don’t worry you are not only getting this error. There are many gamers who get this message and you can fix it easily if you carefully follow these following steps.
Generally, everyone suggests to reinstall steam and download all the games from the beginning or reinstall steam.
But, this process is so time-consuming and it’s not easy to download the games with huge size again. So, I am here to help you in fixing this error without deleting steam.
How do I fix steam Disk write error?
In this post, I am gonna describe the top 20 ways to get rid of this problem, no matter if you are getting this error in up[dating a game or in installing. So, let’s fix it-
#1 Restart steam:
Your first step should be close steam and shutdown your PC. Then power it on after 2-3 minutes and check if steam is still showing disk write error or not?
I know this is the basic, but believe me over 40% get succeed by doing this process. Don’t worry if you haven’t fix it yet, I have tons of ways for you-
#2 Check your antivirus:
Do you know your antivirus can block your steam files? Yes, if you are using an antivirus (especially cheap one) they can’t identify the virus and due to which the files look like viruses were blocked by them.
Though you download games from steam, it blocks game files from steam since it thinks they are viruses. And you get this error.
So, it is always better to check if your antivirus is blocking files like this. You can also turn off your antivirus for some time and check if your problem is fixed or not. Or just give permission steam folder to download games by simply going in your antivirus.
That’s why I always prefer to use a good antivirus especially if you have games on your computer.
#3 Run as administrator:
Just right click on the steam icon and run as administrator. Basically, if you run any program as administrator, tons of small/weird problems solve automatically. So, you should try this at once.
#4 Delete corrupted file:
If your software (steam) can’t download a particular file, generally it saves in the folder and that’s why when you try to redownload, it resumes from the corrupted file and nothing happens.
So, right-click on the Steam icon and click on open file in the location. Then go to logs/content_log and find files like failed, disk write error, error. If you find that, just delete it and check if the steam disk write error is fixed or not.
#5 Delete error files:
Sometimes steam himself downloads 0 kb files when you try to download games with higher size. And this also one of the main reasons due to which you are seeing this disk writing error.
To fix it go to steamappps by right-clicking your steam icon and clicking on open file in location. Then open common directory and find a file that is 0Kb in size, with the name of the game which you are trying to download/upload (where you get this error) last time.
Let’s delete that file –
- Go to the location where you install steam (generally situated in program files ×86/steam)
- If you can’t find it just right click on the steam icon and in open file in the location.
- Then open steamappps and go to common.
- There find a small file (0Kb) with your game name, which is giving error in your steam.
- Delete the file and you are done.
#6 Clear download cache:
It’s very very important to clear download cache in an interval of time. Since existing download cache force steam to take data from that cache.
To clear download cache, open steam and go to settings. Then click on download and then you can see a big button with clear download cache. Just click there and your cache will be cleared.
#7 Repair steam library:
Basically you can find all your downloaded games in the Steam library. So, you can see this error due to its library also.
To fix it, just go to steam then open settings. After that open downloads and you can see the steam library folder there. Right-click on C:\Program Files(86)\Steam and select the repair folder.
After the whole process is done, check if your problem is solved or not.

- Go to settings.

To update drivers, open device manager by click Win+X and update the drivers there by right-clicking them one by one.
After updating all of them check if steam is fixed or not.
#11 change game folders:
If you want you can simply choose a new path where all the games (you are gonna download from the steam in the future) go. Basically, you have to change the downloading location of your games.
It is very useful because you just have to re-download that game only which is giving disk write error, not all the games. And you will not get any error in the near future as you are changing the whole Downloading path and game folder.
To change steam’s folder do these steps-

Just check if your wifi router is alright by connecting it with other devices. If wifi isn’t an issue then do the steps below.
