Currently, if you think about any mid-range CPU that is capable is decent gaming, at least give you smooth performance in 1080P resolution, AMD Ryzen 5 is the best option. But, is tr really good for gaming?
There is no sense expecting 4K gameplay from a processor at this price range. So, before buying CPUs like Ryzen 5, you should know how much performance exactly it can give. And most importantly, is it really capable of running the latest titles. Let’s discuss it in this post.
Ryzen 5 performance in games:
First, you have to know the specifications before the real game benchmark. Don’t worry, I am gonna discuss all of this today. So, let’s starts with the cores:
AMD is always ahead in terms of cores and threads. In simple words, AMD is offering more cores and threads in the budget than other CPU manufacturer companies. Let’s check the cores of some Ryzen 5 CPUs.
|CPU||No. of Cores|
|AMD Ryzen 5 3600||6|
|AMD Ryzen 5 3600X||6|
|AMD Rryzen 5 2600x||6|
So, the overall number of cores f the latest Ryzen 5 processors are almost same.
|AMD Ryzen 5 3600||12|
|AMD Ryzen 5 3600X||12|
|AMD Rryzen 5 2600x||12|
|CPU||Av. clock speed||boosted clock speed|
|AMD Ryzen 5 3600||3.6GHz||4.2GHz|
|AMD Ryzen 5 3600X||3.8GHz||4.4GHz|
|AMD Rryzen 5 2600x||3.6GHz||4.2GHz|
So, we can’t see a huge difference among the different models of Ryzen 5 processors in terms of cores, threads, and clock speed.
Now, to practically know its performance in games, we have done a benchmark.
Benchmark in games:
To know about the performance of Ryzen 5 in games, obviously, we have to test it in different games. So, I have made this benchmark table by testing games on my Ryzen 5 3600X CPU. Let’s check how it performs:
System used for this benchmark:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X.
- RAM: 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ.
- GPU: 1660 super.
- 1TB M.2 SSD.
|Games||Resolution||Frame per second|
|The Shadow of the Tomb Raider||1080P Max||120|
|GTA V||1080P Max||95|
|Assassin creed oddssy||1080P Max||87|
|Battlefield V||1080P Mid||110|
|Cod modern warfare||1080P Max||130|
|Red dead redemption 2||1080P Max||95|
So, from the above results, we can say that this CPU can easily maintain the sweet spot of 60 fps or more than it every time in big games.
The games that tested here are some of the masterpieces from past a few years, so if it can give good performance in such heavy/high resource wanting games, obviously it can do well with others too.
I hope you can understand the capability of Ryzen 5 3600X and it’s performance after this benchmark.
is it good for gaming (My opinion)?
Undoubtedly, Ryzen 5 CPUs are the best mid-range ones and can give awesome price to performance ratio. If you are satisfied with 1080P gaming, it is perfect for you.
Moreover, it can also touch 4k in some games. Under $250, it is quite amazing to get this kind of performance form any CPU.
Moreover, if you analyze this CPU with flagships like core i9, you can only see a little bit of performance rise. So, in my opinion, I don’t think if you are not gonna use your PC at an extreme level, you shouldn’t go with the flagship CPUs.
Rather Ryzen 5 processors are perfect for you.
Talking about gaming, I am using my Ryzen 5 3600X CPU for a long time. And really surprised by its performance, amazing. It can run all the modern big titles and easily maintain 60+ fps in 1080P settings as I showed you in the benchmark section.
I also don’t recommend CPUs like Ryzen 9, core i9 for general users because they are so expensive and you can only see a 10-25% increase in performance than this CPU. But you have to pay almost twice as it’s the price.
But obviously you can’t get a 2 times increase in performance. Not only with the CPUs, but in the case of GPUs also, the price to performance ratio decreases as we move towards more powerful and expensive parts.
That’s why the latest Ryzen 5 CPUs are the best mid-range processor for gaming. And I definitely recommend you to go with these CPUs, but which one?
Best AMD Ryzen 5 CPU for gaming:
We can see a price difference of almost $50 in Ryzen 5 3600 and 3600X. So, the question is which one you have to choose?
My suggestion will be you should go with 3600X. Because it is the latest, increase in performance, and also a budget CPU. And $50 is not a huge amount.
You might not see a huge difference between these CPUs now, but after a few years, you will definitely see it. Now, I am not saying you can see a huge performance difference in the future, but the X variant is gonna give better than the non-X variant, although a little bit.
So, I always recommend going with Ryzen 5 3600X, otherwise, if you have a really strict budget, you can go with the 3600, it is also good.
As for my experience, AMD Ryzen 5 is awesome for gaming and can give buttery smooth performance. Although it is not capable of 4K in big titles, but quite effective in 1080P.
Which is sufficient for casual gaming. I mean if you are not serious about it or play games just for fun, enjoying with your friends, Ryzen 5 is the best CPU for you, performance in cheap.
I know you might be thinking how a $220 CPU can be cheap?
Yes, it is not cheap, but if you compare it with $450 CPUs, then it seems that it is not really very expensive. Rather, seeing its performance, this price is very competitive.
So, AMD Ryzen 5 is perfect fit for mid-range gaming.
