Building your own laptop

Building your own laptop, the all in one guide

If you build a desktop then you could able to feel the joy of installing every part of the system one by one. Like first install the CPU, then the cooler, RAMs and gradually the whole machine is made. And the first feeling after power-on is out of the world. But, today’s topic is not about PC building, it’s about building your own laptop, is it even possible? Let’s discuss it:-)

See, a laptop is a very slime computer with very very low space. So, there is little hope for you in building your own laptop. If you don’t know computer hardware, in that case also I am sure you will be able to make a laptop by combining different parts, but factors like proper ventilation, heating problems take place. Because, reputed laptop companies like Asus, MSI, Acer spend millions of dollars in the designs of their laptops. But, you can’t afford that, can you? If you know hardware, go ahead and make a custom laptop only for you.

I hope now you get an idea about problems generally occurs in a laptop building. So, let’s build ur laptop.

Building your own laptop

Let’s build your own laptop:

Don’t worry, you don’t come here to only read no you can’t. In this part, I am gonna discuss how you can build your own laptop by yourself (with computer hardware information). But before starting, If you don’t have knowledge about PC hardware, don’t go further, please ask your senior (in this case) to do the following steps.

Choose parts for your awesome laptop:

Before choosing parts for your laptop think the main work you are gonna do with your laptop. Like if you are building this for your video editing, gaming and like these high graphic oriented work, you need a good GPU, CPU, and RAM as well. But if you expect more from your laptop, like you only want to do some general tasks then you shouldn’t spend too much on GPU.

For these reasons, I suggest you to think about your uses and then move towards picking laptop parts.

#1. Choose CPU, head of your laptop:

CPU stands for the central processing unit. It is also called the head of your device. All the commands are given by you (in a laptop) first processed in the CPU then the signal goes to other parts like RAM, GPU and they also get together to complete the command according to their work. So, basically, if you wanna set your laptop base strong to make sure to go with a powerful CPU.

Now the question is how much powerful CPU you actually need to make a laptop? As I think, if you want to build a basic laptop you shouldn’t buy a super powerful CPU. Average processors like Intel core i3, RYZEN 3 are a perfect fit for you as they are not too expensive and can give you very good experience in doing general tasks like browsing, internet surfing, watching video, etc.

It completely depends on you what type of processor you choose for building your laptop. Now, let’s move towards the selection of RAM.

#2. Choosing RAM for your laptop build:

Now, different people have different opinions in this category. Some say, to run modern software, you should not down below 16GB RAM. But, if you ask me how much RAM should you choose for building your laptop, I say it’s vari.

If you want to do general tasks as I said before, I suggest going with 8GB RAM. Because there is no sense of spending money for extra which you don’t gonna use in the future. Isn’t it?

But, if you want to do basic gaming or use powers software, I recommend you go with at least 16GB RAM. Since the latest games are no longer Small, I feel you need at least this much RAM to get smoothness, especially in gaming.

Talking about the operating system, if you want to use operating systems like Windows 10, 8.1 then you should choose 16GB or if you are ok with Windows 7,8, Vista(rare:) 8GB is the perfect option for you.

Now, If you want to do proper gaming, then is 16GB sufficient for you? My answer is Yes. 16GB RAM is sufficient for 1080P max/ultra settings gaming. But if you have money or you want to do 4K gaming, go with 32GB.

I hope now you can decide your RAM requirements for building your own laptop. Now, let’s move towards the Graphics card.

#3. Choosing a perfect graphics card for your laptop:

If a processor is the head of your laptop then I say a graphics card is the soul of it. Because to run modern/latest software you are gonna need a powerful GPU (Graphics card).

I am not saying to buy GPUs like RTX 2080 to everyone, but if you can buy it, what is the problem. To get ultimate results, like 4K 60fps gaming you must have a powerful GPU with your CPU.

Remember, your laptop can’t give you the desired results if you go buy a good CPU and GPU both. So let’s discuss, one by one, what types of graphics card you should install on your laptop.

First, let’s begin with the general user. Do you know your chrome browser also needs GPU? So, although you are building your own laptop for general purposes, a good graphics card is really important for you.

For basic users, I prefer graphics cards like Nvidia GTX 1650, 1660, 1660Ti, etc. There are no limitations, but you should buy at least these I mentioned above. This is the basic price range to buy a cheap GPU. If you want cheaper, you can’t get good performance.

Now, let’s move forward to medium users. If you want to do some gaming or use powerful softwares I suggest you go with Nvidia Super cards. Since Nvidia’s new super cards have the latest architecture in a very cheap as well as affordable price. That why it, you can utilize every single penny you spend in the super graphics cards.

You also get a good variety of these super cards. You can buy 2060Super, 2070Super and also 2080Super for 1080P gaming.
Now, for 4K gamers, video editors I suggest to buy the most powerful cards i.e. RTX 2080, GTX 1080Ti, etc. If you are thinking about why I don’t say about 2080Ti. Because RTX 2080Ti is not available on laptops. So, try other GPUs.

#4. Hard drive/SSD:

I think now you can be able to choose CPU, GPU, and RAM for your laptop. If you have chosen them then let’s discuss how to buy a hard drive for your laptop.

For average users, don’t buy SSD because they are too expensive but if you can afford them you should buy them. If you don’t know what is SSD, SSD stands for solid-state drive(SSD) which basically fasts your laptop’s loading speed.

But, SSD’s are way more expensive than a usual hard drive. So, if you are a general user and have a tight budget, hard disk is the perfect choice for you.

But, if you want to speed up your system, I suggest you get SSD and enjoy gaming:)

#5. Laptop battery:

Laptop needs much more power than a smartphone since gives more output also, so it is very important to choose a proper laptop battery for you. Otherwise, your battery will die 2-3 hours of work.

But, suppose you are making a gaming laptop and you can play games constantly for 2-3 hours without charging, this is a good average. Because you need a really good battery for long hours of gaming.

If you are making your own laptop for general uses, then you don’t need that much powerful battery. Because to do gaming you have to choose powerful laptop batteries as it requires more power.

But if you check the latest gaming laptops you get battery backup up to 8 hours. And don’t forget to check if your battery is compatible with your CPU and GPU.

#6. Notebook/laptops shell:

The most difficult thing is to buy a laptop shell where you are gonna put all your other parts. I have said you before don’t buy it yourself if you don’t have hardware knowledge. You can also take help from an expert.

Now, how can you get shell for your laptop. Well, you can find them in stores, online platforms or you can also make them own. If you are a hardware expert, you can easily make this, but it would be harder without any knowledge.

You can also check out stores and don’t forget to check if it is comparable with your laptop parts.

Required tools:

I hope you are ready with all the parts and you have also checked if all your parts ate compatible with together. Now, let’s discuss the tools you are gonna need to build your laptop.

#1. Screwdrivers:

If you want to build your own laptop, you are gonna need good screwdriver. Because you have to tighten screws of the motherboard, GPU and also other parts.

If you are thinking to buy a new kit, make sure you buy a set of screwdrivers with magnet. They are the best for these types of work.

#2. Use anti-static bands:

Do you know you have static current in your body? And if this current somehow runs in your computer parts, they can also be damaged. So, I always prefer to wear an anti-static band before this build.

These bands are available in the market. You can buy it from them or you can also order it online. That completely depends upon you:)

Let’s build your own laptop:

First, turn over the laptop case so that you can easily unscrew the slots. Before starting, make sure to read/Know about laptop slots. If you are done with all these steps, let’s build your laptop-

#1. Installing the motherboard:

First, open the backside with the screwdriver and install the motherboard you have selected. It’s very easy, you just have to align the holes and screw them up. That’s all you have to do with the motherboard.

#2. Installing CPU:

Building your own laptop

So, the easiest part of building your own laptop is CPU and RAM. If you look carefully, you can see a CPU socket in the middle of the motherboard.

All you have to do is take from CPU from packaging, match the triangle symbols of in CPU socket and in the CPU and slowly mount it in the socket. Then pull the hook and fix it. Your CPU part is done.

#3. Installing CPU fan:

After installing the CPU, next you have to install it’s fan i.e. CPU fan. It generally comes with the CPU. You can check it from where you are buying.

To do so, first place it on the CPU and press it’s four legs. Then tight its legs with the screwdriver and you are ready to go:)

#4. Installing the RAM:

Building your own laptop

After the motherboard, it’s RAM time now. To install RAM, hold a RAM stick and attached it to the RA slot available on the motherboard. If you can’t recognize it, see it in your manual, it comes with the motherboard.

After that, give it a gentle push and you can hear a sound of nice click. Installing RAM is done now.

#5. Graphics Card:

If you are a heavy user you definitely gonna need a powerful graphics card. But, if you are going to use your laptop for general purpose, you don’t need a graphics card.

But before buying a GPU make sure to buy a case that has the facility and enough space for a graphics card. Now, let’s install it-

After opening the back panel of your case, just mount your GPU in the motherboard. Therefore tight the screws and you are done.

But, to get the full potential of your graphics make sure to install it’s latest drivers. You can simply download them from their official website.

#6. Hard drive/SSD:

Moving towards the storage section, you can choose a hard drive or SSD for your laptop. To install a hard drive first attach it with the tray and fix the tray in the corner of your laptop.

You can check the place of your hard drive in the manual. In the case of SSD, just fix it on your motherboards SSD slot. That’s all.

#7. Laptops battery:

Installing the battery is very easy. You just have to mount it in the below of the foldable part. There are also lock switches to fix the battery.

You can remove the battery at any time.

#8. CD drive:

Some laptops don’t have it. But if you want to CD drive you can install it very easily. These drives generally take power by SATA ports. You can simply install them by fixing them with a screwdriver.

That’s all guys, now I hope your laptop is ready for booting up! Let’s on it.

Booting up your laptop:

Now, it’s time to power up your laptop. To do so, you need a pen drive, internet connection and have to buy the Windows key. First, open another computer and mount an empty Pendrive in it(more than 4GB). Then format it.

After that go to the Windows official website and download Windows. To download it choose create installation media and hit next. Click on the USB drive option and choose your pen drive option. Now, you are ready to download official windows 10.

After finishing, enjoy the USB drive and mount it on your brand new laptop. Turn on its switch and go to BIOS and in BIOS select primary booting option to a USB drive and save it.

Now, your laptop will gonna automatically detect your USB drive. After that, hit on next, select partition and install Windows.
I hope this guide can help you in installing Windows on your brand new laptop. After installing, you have to buy a genuine key for your operating system. You can simply buy it from here.

Make sure all your parts are working well. If you found some parts not working, install drivers. You can simply download them from here.

why building your own laptop is so tough?

Here are some factors I am mentioning and I am pretty sure that these points can help you to realize how tough to build a custom laptop.

  • You don’t get as much space as those big gaming desktops. You have to assemble all your parts in a tiny space.
  • It is very hard to make proper ventilation for the flowing of hot air in a custom laptop (unless you are a hardware expert) and if you don’t design the proper ventilation then your system starts lagging.
  • The toughest problem is making the whole design. Big laptop manufacturer companies have their own hardware designers and they pay them a heavy amount for this work.

So, if you are thinking to do it yourself, I don’t recommend to do it without any experience. But, it’s gonna be very tough without proper knowledge. So, making the design of a laptop is even complicated for general people. Then think, installing all these components in a small box is gonna be how frustrating? But, In the case of desktops, you get a big CPU case where you can select any part according to your wish in a budget-friendly price range.

Can laptops be really assembled?

After a complete guide on building your own laptop, I am gonna answer you can laptops be really assembled?
As I said before, building a laptop is not as simple as a desktop. The most difficult part is making its case I mean it’s outer layer.

But, does it mean you can’t make your own laptop. Obviously not, you can definitely build your own laptop. But you need good hardware knowledge to do so. So, if you are a computer hardware expert you definitely know how to make custom-built laptop cases.

Building your own laptop

Is it cheaper to build your own computer?

If you ask me which is cheaper, I say it’s vari. Because the configuration of laptops made by popular laptop brands can’t be the same with the parts you have chosen. And many factors like developing fees, delivery price, tax, making charges are attached to the topic.

In a brief, if you are a hardware expert and know to choose the best parts for your own laptop build, you can definitely make a laptop at a cheaper price than a usual laptop by any famous brand.

But if you have no knowledge about these things, I suggest you to go with ready-made laptops, which are also good.

Is it possible to build a laptop by yourself?

As I said before, you can definitely build an amazing laptop by yourself if you have knowledge of computer hardware. I hope the above guide is gonna help you in building your own laptop.

If you build a desktop then you could able to feel the joy of installing every part of the system one by one. Like first install the CPU, then the cooler, RAMs and gradually the whole machine is made. And the first feeling after power-on is out of the world.

Why building a laptop is almost impossible:

Here are some factors I am mentioning and I am pretty sure that these points can help you to realize how tough to build a custom laptop.

You don’t get as much space as those big gaming desktops. You have to assemble all your parts in a tiny space.
It is very hard to make proper ventilation for the flowing of hot air in a custom laptop (unless you are a hardware expert) and if you don’t design the proper ventilation then your system starts lagging.

The toughest problem is making the whole design. Big laptop manufacturer companies have their own hardware designers and they pay them a heavy amount for this work. So, if you are thinking to do it yourself, I don’t recommend to do it without any experience.

Conclusion:

I hope you can now imagine how the complete laptop building process looks like. I have mentioned all the major points in detail.
