With the launch of Nvidia’s new 30 series GPUs, budget-wise we are one step closer to 4K gaming. Now, a $500 GPU (like RTX 3070) can also run games a 4K resolution. We all know that. But, what about the CPUs? Which CPUs (processors) are best for 4K gaming. Let’s discuss it today:
|CPUs (processors)||My opinion/Specifications|
|Intel Core i9 10900K||Best performance available, expensive though|
|AMD Ryzen 5 3600X||Best budget, can handle 4K gaming pretty well|
|AMD Ryzen 9 3950X||16 cores and 32 threads, awesome for multitasking and gaming, not best for gaming.|
|Intel Core i7 10700K||Its performance gap with i5 is too small.|
#1. Intel Core i9 10900K:
This is the best CPU that is available in the market. It is basically a 10th gen. Intel CPU that comes with 10 cores and 20 threads. However, it is expensive, around $665 but still, this is the best one for 4K gaming.
Not only 4K, if you have GPUs like 3090, then you can run games at 8K resolution too with this CPU.
Note that I have said you can run games at 8K resolution, not play smoothly, this is business:)
So, if you have a good budget, you can definitely go with the 10th generation Intel core i9.
Talking about its specifications, the base clock speed of this CPU is around 3.7 GHz that you can overclock up to 5.3 GHz. Till now, this is the best performance we get from a CPU. You need the Z490 chipset motherboards to run this CPU because it doesn’t support old Z390 sockets (Intel’s habits).
It has a TDP of 125W, which is considerable seeing is performance. Also, it comes with 20MB L3 cache.
Core i9 is perfect for those who just want the best available in the market. It is superb for 4K gaming too. However the hard-core 4K performance mostly depends on the GPU, but this CPU is not gonna do any bottleneck with them. So, you can take your gaming to the next level with core i9 up to 8K.
If you ask me, I only suggest this CPU for those who can spend any amount, basically don’t have any money restrictions. Undoubtedly, it is awesome for 4K gaming but surely its price doesn’t justify the performance.
So, I definitely don’t recommend it for budget PC builders. come on! There are plenty of good budget CPUs for 4K gaming. Check the below options too.
- The Core 10th gen. i9 comes with 10 cores and 20 threads.
- The base clock speed of it is 3.7GHz which can be boosted up to 5.3GHz.
- The TDP of this CPU is 125W.
- Comes with 20MB L3 Cache.
- The best performance.
- High single, multi-core performance.
- Can run up to 8K.
- Unbelievably expensive.
#2. AMD Ryzen 5 3600X:
If you are looking for a good budget PCU that can run games at up to 4K resolution, this will be the best one for this purpose. I like AMD Ryzen 5 3600X for its awesome gaming performance around $250-$260 price range.
So, this can be very good one for you, especially at this price point.
It comes with 6 cores and 12 threads and can easily run graphics-heavy games at 4K pretty easily especially with a high-end GPU like RTX 3070, 3080, etc. I have personally tested it with these GPUs and I am surprised by its performance.
As I have found, it can easily run games 4K 60 -80fps with 3080 and in some light (low graphics games), Ryzen 5 with 3080 was giving me up to 90-100 fps. So, definitely this CPU worth its price for 4K gaming and doesn’t create bottleneck problems.
Talking about its specs, it needs 95W TDP and comes with 32 MB L3 cache. It has 6 cores and 12 threads and perfect for the high-end tasks at such an amazing price. He base clock speed of this CPU is around 3.8GHz than can be boosted (overclocked) up to 4.4GHz.
I highly recommend this CPU if you are looking for a great CPU in the budget. For 4K gaming, as I personally realized it doesn’t create a bottleneck with high-end GPU and can easily smoothly run games.
So, you can definitely go with this one.
- It comes with 6 cores and 12 threads.
- The base clock speed of it is around 3.8GHz and can be overclocked up to 4.4GHz.
- It needs 95W TDP.
- Comes with 32MB L3 cache.
- Good budget CPU, high price to performance ratio.
- Easily handle 4K gaming performance.
- It is a budget CPU, if you have money go for higher options.
#3. AMD Ryzen 9 3950X:
With 16 cores and 32 threads, this is another high-end yet pretty expensive CPU. It costs around $708, seeing the price of i9 (a 10 core CPU), this looks reasonable.
However, this CPU is mostly used (gives more performance) for other tasks like video editing, rendering, 3d design, etc where you need more cores and threads. For gaming also, this CPU can deliver 4K performance pretty well but still, its price is too high and only can be boosted 4.7GHz.
That’s why it is in my 3rd position. It is perfect for those who have to do video editing, rendering, higher core needed tasks with gaming. Like a streamer, gaming YouTuber, etc.
Otherwise you can skip this CPU.
Talking about its specifications, it comes with 16 cores and 32 threads. It is an AM4 socket CPU, you can easily install it any budget motherboard too.
It also comes with a 64MB L3 cache and needs 105W TDP. The base clock speed of it is 3.5 GHz that can be boosted to 4.7GHz after overclocking.
I recommend this CPU for multitaskers. Definitely, you shouldn’t go only for gaming with this CPU. Undoubtedly it can run games at 4K resolution, but overpriced for only gaming.
- AMD Ryzen 9 3950X comes with 16 cores and 32 threads.
- The base clock speed of it is 3.5GHz can be overclocked to 4.7GHz.
- Comes with 64 L3 cache.
- Has 105W TDP.
You can use it for high core needed tasks.
- 16 cores and 32 threads are a lot.
- Good for multitasking with gaming and video content creators.
- Overpriced for only gaming.
- Need a good cooling system.
#4. Intel Core i7 10700K:
Here is another high-end CPU for 4K gaming. If you have a budget of around $380-$400, this will be the perfect CPU up to 8K gaming.
I like the heating of this CPU. Because you generally don’t need a super-duper bulky cooling system with this 10th gen. i7 CPU after overclocking too.
However, you have need 400 series chipset (Z490) motherboards for installation this CPU. It comes with 8 cores and 16 threads with a TDP of 125W.
Also, it is an LGA 1200 socket type CPU and has base clock speed of 3.8GHz and overclockable up to 5.1GHz.
So, for high-end uses as well as 4K gaming this CPU is awesome.
This CPU is awesome for high-end uses and 4K gaming too. Under $380, this CPU can handle high-end GPUs pretty well. So, if you have a budget you can definitely choose it for 4K gaming.
- It comes with 8 cores and 16 threads.
- Has a base clock speed of 3.8GHz that can be overclocked up to 5.1GHz.
- Contains 16 MB L3 Cache.
- Overclocking is good.
- The price is not too high.
- Enough for 4K gaming with a powerful GPU.
- Performance gap between i5 and i7 is very small.
I hope after reading this post your doubts about 4K gaming CPU are clear now. Feel free to contact me still you can’t choose anyone from my list. I will definitely help you.
That’s it for today, see you in the next post, keep gaming:)
